In severe winters with multiple cold spells you may want to consider a half or full pallet, but for most residential use the 20 bag bundle is a comfortable supply.

White de-icing salt is a fine pure salt (99.9% NaCl, 0.3 to 0.5mm grains) that works faster and needs less quantity, while brown rock salt is naturally mined salt with impurities that stains surfaces and requires larger amounts. White salt leaves no marks on paving, decking or entrance flooring.

Spread the salt before ice forms, ideally on a dry surface just before frost is forecast. Prevention works better than treatment, once ice bonds to a surface it takes far more salt to remove.

As a rough guide, 40 grams of white de-icing salt covers around one square metre. A typical UK driveway plus paths uses around 400 to 800 grams per treatment. In heavy snow or thick ice, spread more on high traffic areas like steps and slopes.

White de-icing salt is safe for most driveways, tarmac, block paving, concrete paths and stone steps. Avoid using it on very new concrete (less than 12 months old) as it can affect curing, and use sparingly near plants and lawns.
