It’s a shame it took so long to be delivered; you advertise next-day delivery. I’m sure delays can happen in extreme weather conditions. But I think it could have been delivered a bit sooner
doorstep delivery
Review by Pro33college 24/11/2025
The pallet of road salt was delivered quickly; however, when placing the order, I was asked to leave a note regarding the delivery. So I had mentioned that the driver could drive onto the site through the large gate just around the corner. But then the pallet was left at the front door, so there was no room for a (manual) pallet truck to manoeuvre it into position. Now I had to reload it all, then wheel it right through the school, only to have to lug it all the way to the shed on the site again. A real shame.

Brown grit salt vs. White rock salt: making the right choice

In the UK, winter gritting typically involves choosing between two main options: traditional brown rock salt and pure white rock salt. Understanding the difference is key to finding the right product for your needs:

  • Brown Rock Salt (Grit Salt): Mined directly from the earth, this traditional salt contains natural insolubles (grit). While it is widely searched for and commonly used on major roads for added traction, it can leave a muddy, brown residue that gets tracked into buildings and homes.

  • White Rock Salt: Made from pure sodium chloride, white rock salt is a highly effective, cleaner alternative. It dissolves completely, leaving no messy footprint behind. For most domestic driveways, garden paths, retail entrances, and commercial properties, white rock salt is increasingly the preferred choice for maintaining both safety and cleanliness.

FAQ

What is the difference between rock salt and grit salt?

In the UK, "grit salt" usually refers to traditional brown rock salt, which contains natural grit and impurities that aid traction but leave a residue. "Rock salt" is a broader term that includes both the brown variant and pure white rock salt, which is favoured for being residue-free and cleaner for foot traffic areas.

How much rock salt do I need for my driveway?

For preventing ice formation (anti-icing), you typically need around 10 to 15 grams of salt per square metre. If you are actively melting existing snow or thick ice (de-icing), you may need up to 40 grams per square metre. A standard 25kg bag goes a long way for a typical UK driveway.

Is your de-icing salt BS 3247 certified?

Yes, the de-icing salt we supply complies with the British Standard BS 3247. This indicates it is a council-grade product, trusted by facility management companies, schools, and local authorities for highly effective winter maintenance.

Can I order rock salt in bulk quantities?

Absolutely. We supply wholesale quantities to B2B customers and domestic users alike. You can easily order 1 tonne bulk bags or complete pallets of rock salt directly through our website with fast, reliable UK delivery.
