Clear snow before gritting
- Avoid problems by removing snow before gritting.
- With a thick layer of snow (such as 20 centimetres) spreading salt is less effective. Remove the snow first with a snow shovel and then spread the salt.
Preventive gritting
- Prevent slipperiness by gritting preventively when bad weather is forecast.
- Preventive gritting is often enough if the temperature is not too low and precipitation stays limited. It stops snow and sleet from sticking to the
Curative gritting
- Keep the surface passable by gritting straight away when it starts to snow or sleet.
- The aim is to keep the surface passable, or to make it passable again as quickly as possible.
Repressive gritting
- Prevent future slipperiness by gritting after it has already become slippery.
- This also has a preventive effect on future precipitation.
Even distribution
- Make sure the salt is distributed evenly across the path you want to clear of snow.
- Use a salt spreader (handheld spreader or spreader trolley) to make this easier.
Keep the salt dry
- Store salt in a dry place to prevent clumping.
- Storing it in a garage, shed or storeroom is ideal. Alternatively, a yellow grit bin can be used so the salt is always available.
