Which water softeners take granular salt?
Granular salt is the third major UK water softener salt format, alongside tablet salt and block salt. It's specifically required by:
- Older domestic softeners — many systems from before 2010 that haven't been updated to tablet salt

Why granular salt dissolves faster than tablets
A water softener works by dissolving salt into a strong brine solution that flushes through the resin tank during regeneration. The rate at which salt dissolves matters significantly for performance:
- Tablet salt — compressed pellets (~10g each), dissolve gradually. Best for standard domestic softeners with moderate regeneration cycles.
- Granular salt / crystal salt — loose 1-2mm beads, dissolve significantly faster. Best for high-capacity or fast-cycling softeners.
