Personal data we process and why

We do everything we can to keep your data private. The data we ask for is used solely to help you as effectively as possible. Below we explain what data we collect and why. You will also find information about your rights, who has access to your data, and how long we retain it.

Orders & pre-orders

To make your experience more personal and convenient.

First and last name

We use your first and last name to address you personally.

Address details

We include your address and town on your invoice. We also use this as your delivery address.

Phone number

We use your phone number to send you a message about your order or our stock availability. If something is unclear, we may give you a quick call. Occasionally we may also call to check that everything went smoothly. We will not call you unnecessarily beyond this.

Email address

Your email address is your username for logging into your account. We also use it to send you personal and general communications. If you no longer wish to receive emails, you can update your preferences in your account or unsubscribe via the link in any email we send.

Payment details and invoice

We use a secure payment environment. When you pay by bank transfer or card, your details are stored in our administration to link the payment to your order. We only use your bank account details when a refund is due. When you pay by credit or debit card, your card details are sent directly from our secure environment to our payment processor Multisafepay, who handle our card payments. We do not see your card details; Multisafepay only informs us whether your payment was successful. Your invoice includes the following details: your full name, address and town, invoice number, customer number and order number. The invoice cannot be amended once issued.

IP address

We use your IP address to identify you on our systems.

Delivery

To deliver your order correctly, on the right date and at the right time, we share the following details with our delivery partner.

First and last name

The delivery driver can verify that you are the correct recipient.

Address and town

Always helpful for the delivery driver to know exactly where to deliver your order.

Phone number

We use your phone number to send you a text message when we are on our way for certain deliveries. If something is unclear, we may give you a quick call. Occasionally we may also call to check that everything went smoothly. We will not call you unnecessarily beyond this.

Email address

You will receive an email to track your order. In some cases you will receive a separate email regarding your delivery appointment, as we want to make sure you are at home to receive it.

Account

To make things easier for you.

Order number

Useful so we can look up what you have ordered from us. You may need this number if you contact us.

Password

We store your password in encrypted form. It is so securely encrypted that even we cannot see what your password is. The system verifies your password when you log in.

Visiting our website

When you browse our website or click on a product, we may place cookies and similar technologies on your device. We and third parties use cookies to track your browsing behaviour on our website. This allows us to track search terms you use and see which products you view or purchase.

We use this information to show adverts based on your interests, measure the effectiveness of our advertising, and personalise emails.

Newsletter & email

We send you various types of emails. You will receive transactional emails related to your purchase, such as information about your order or tips about your products. In these emails we use techniques to measure and improve the effectiveness of our services.

You can also sign up for personalised offers and our weekly newsletter. Personalised offers are sent occasionally and are based on your purchases with Salt Giant. The content of the newsletter is personalised based on your purchases and the products you have viewed on our website.

Review requests

Your feedback is very important to us. We use Trustpilot as an independent review platform. We will invite you by email to leave a review.

Who has access to your data?

We only share your data with other parties where strictly necessary for our services. These parties include: delivery partners, suppliers, product support, payment partners, IT service providers, advertising platforms such as Google, and the platform we use to collect reviews. Our delivery partner needs your details to deliver your order to the correct address. Parties such as data management platforms, media and advertising agencies, and research firms become involved when we wish to provide you with personalised advice or targeted advertising, for example based on your interest in certain products. In cases of suspected fraud or where legally required, we may be obliged to share customer data with government authorities or law enforcement agencies.

Parties that receive access to your data from us may only use it to provide a service on our behalf, unless they are independently responsible for obtaining and protecting your data.

How long do we retain your personal data?

We do not retain or use your data for longer than necessary. After the relevant period, we delete all data we hold about you, or use it only in anonymised form where we need certain data for internal analyses and reporting, such as the value of your order.

In practical terms, we apply the following retention periods, after which your data is deleted:

  • Inactive customer accounts are deleted after 7 years. After that period we use your data only in anonymised form for internal reporting.
  • HMRC requires us to retain our administration including your invoice, payment and order data for 7 years. After this we use only anonymised data for internal reporting.
  • Recorded telephone calls are deleted by default after 30 days, unless we have a legal obligation to retain a call for longer.
  • If you have subscribed to our newsletter or given consent to receive personalised messages, we retain that consent for 7 years.
  • Data we use to prevent fraud is retained for an extended period. Not ideal, but necessary.

Your rights: access, correction or deletion of your data

Would you like to view, correct or delete your personal data? You are entitled to do so under UK GDPR. You can request free access to your personal data and receive a copy, or ask us to amend, delete, or restrict the use of your data, or update your email preferences. Simply let us know by email. You can also object to the use of your data for marketing purposes, or indicate that you believe your privacy rights outweigh our legitimate interests — in which case we will reconsider the matter. If you would like us to transfer your data to another party (data portability), we can arrange that too. Send your request by email and we will take care of it.

We need to be certain that you are who you say you are. We may therefore ask for additional information to verify your identity, including for any unclear requests.

If you are unhappy with how we handle your personal data, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

Do you have a question or complaint?

We are happy to help if you have any concerns about the processing of your personal data. Please contact our Data Protection Officer:
