Road salt is mined rock salt in a coarse grade, spread on carriageways and hard standing to stop ice bonding to the surface. The marl and clay left in the salt is deliberate: it gives immediate grip, and it helps the grains stay on the road instead of bouncing into the verge as traffic passes. They are the same mineral, and the names describe the use rather than the product. Road salt tends to mean the coarse brown grade bought in bulk, grit salt the bagged version for drives, paths and car parks, and de-icing salt is the general term for anything spread to melt ice. Where residue matters, for example a town centre pavement, use white British salt instead.
Highways practice is roughly 10 to 20 grams per square metre for a precautionary treatment, and up to 40 grams per square metre on compacted snow or ice. Pre wetting the salt, or spreading before the surface drops below zero, makes a treatment last considerably longer than salting on top of ice.
A tonne of road salt gives about 50,000 square metres of preventive gritting. For a car park or a business estate, that is a full season. Most site managers order before November, because pallet availability and next day slots both disappear once the first cold snap is forecast. For smaller sites, bagged grit salt is easier to handle.
