Refilling salt in your water softener? Here's how

Your water softener only really does its job with enough salt. But how much should go in? And which type do you need? We'll explain it for you – including a handy video.

1. Open the lid of the water softener. This can usually be done by hand.

2. Check the salt level.

3. Slowly add salt tablets or crystals until the reservoir is full.

4. Close the lid neatly again.

5. Done — the water softener is refilled and works as it should again.

On average it's smart to check every 4 weeks whether there's still enough salt in the reservoir. How often the water softener needs refilling depends on water usage and the type of appliance. In a household with more people or higher usage (for example a rain shower or bath) this will logically be more frequent. Do you use an automatic water softener? Then regeneration salt is often the best choice, as it's specially developed for the system's flushing process.

The right amount of salt in a water softener is important for good operation. Fill the reservoir with salt tablets or crystals, so there's enough room left for water and you avoid overdosing.

There are a few clear signs to watch for:

• The salt in the reservoir is (almost) gone

• The water feels or tastes “hard” again

• An indicator light or display shows a notification (on advanced models)

Waiting until the water softener salt has completely run out isn't wise. Without salt, limescale builds up again on taps, tiles and household appliances. Regularly refilling your water softener with salt prevents that problem.

• Set a reminder on your phone to check the salt level monthly.
• Store the salt in a dry place so it doesn't clump.
• Only use salt suitable for water softeners.
