Why does my chlorinator say "low salt" when the pool is full?
Few things are more frustrating for a pool owner than carrying heavy bags of salt, carefully calculating the dosage, adding it to the water, and still seeing a glaring red 'low salt' warning light on the control panel.
Before rushing out to buy more bags—and risking a severe over-salting issue—it is important to understand how your system measures salinity. A chlorinator does not actually 'taste' the salt; it measures electrical conductivity. Several factors can interfere with this reading. Here is a troubleshooting guide to identify and fix a false low salt reading.
The cold water factor in the UK
This is the most common cause of false readings, particularly in the UK. Salt cells measure the electrical conductivity of the water to estimate the salt concentration (ppm).
Water temperature has a direct impact on conductivity. Cold water is a poor conductor of electricity. If the pool water drops below 15°C, the chlorinator will struggle to pass a current through the cell. The system will misinterpret this poor conductivity as a lack of salt, triggering a low salt warning even if the chemical balance is absolutely perfect. Never add more salt simply because the water is cold; wait for it to heat up and check the reading again.
Calcium scale build-up on the salt cell
Inside the chlorinator cell are a series of delicate titanium plates. During the electrolysis process, a highly alkaline environment is created directly on these plates, which naturally attracts calcium.
Over time, this calcium hardens into a white, crusty scale. If this scale coats the plates, it acts as an insulator, blocking the electrical current. Just like cold water, the machine registers this blocked current as a lack of salt in the water. Inspect the cell regularly and clean it with a mild acid wash according to the manufacturer's instructions.
The salt has not fully dissolved yet
If salt has recently been added to the pool, the warning light might simply be a matter of timing. Heavy salt crystals sink to the bottom of the pool. If they are not actively brushed until they vanish, the concentrated salt remains trapped at the deepest point.
The surface water being drawn into the skimmer and passed through the chlorinator may genuinely still have a low salt content. Always allow the pump to run for a full 24 hours after adding salt before trusting the chlorinator's digital reading.
A failing or outdated salt cell
Salt cells do not last forever. The special coating on the titanium plates degrades slightly every time the machine is turned on. The average lifespan of a high-quality salt cell is between 3 and 7 years.
As the cell reaches the end of its life, its ability to conduct electricity drops dramatically. If the water is warm, the cell is completely clean of calcium scale, and independent water test strips confirm the salt ppm is correct, the cell itself has likely failed and requires replacing.
