During this time, the concentrated salt resting on the pool floor can cause severe, permanent staining to the liner or the concrete finish. Furthermore, until the tablets dissolve completely, the chlorinator will register a low salt level and fail to produce enough chlorine, leaving the pool vulnerable to algae.

It is also vital to check the exact type of softener salt. While premium tablets are pure, some cheaper granular softener salts contain rust inhibitors or a higher percentage of insoluble dirt and dust. If these impurities are dumped into a swimming pool, they will cloud the water, stain the steps, and potentially coat the delicate titanium plates of the salt cell.
